About ISO 45001:2018
ISO 45001:2018 is the new international voluntary standard for occupational health and safety which like OHSAS 18001 also aims at reducing unacceptable work risks and consistently enhancing the OHS performance. ISO 45001:2018 is a generic standard and can be applied to all kinds of organizations and set ups irrespective of their nature, type and size of business. It lays a set of guidelines that establish a framework by specifying requirements for your organization's OHSMS. Aligning your organization's OHSMS with ISO 45001:2018 can significantly mitigate risk by enhancing safety and lowering the incidents of injury and disease in workplace.
On publication of ISO 45001:2018, OHSAS 18001 will be withdrawn. Commencing from the date of publication of ISO 45001:2018, organizations currently certified to OHSAS 18001 will have a 3-year transition period to upgrade to the new standard.

Gist of Changes in ISO 45001:2018
- ISO 45001:2018 will have a common high-level structure and terms and conditions similar to other management systems. This means the standard will facilitate the implementation process and integration of other management systems like ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, etc.
- The new standard lays emphasis on ‘organization’s context’. Hence, according to the new standard, organizations need to have a larger view and consider what the society expects from them in terms of health and safety issues.
- Changes have been incorporated in fundamental concepts of ‘risk, worker and workplace’.
- Terms like monitoring, measurement, effectiveness, OH&S performance and process have also been redefined. Terms ‘document and record’ have been replaced by ‘documented information’. There are guidelines for maintenance of ‘documented information’.
- Unlike OHSAS 18001, health and safety responsibilities will not just be present with the safety manager, but OHSMS will become a part of the overall management system. This will require the top management to have a stronger leadership role in OHSMS.
- ISO 45001:2018 will focus on ‘identifying and controlling risks’ and not just ‘hazards’.
- The new standard also focusses on how suppliers, contractors and vendors of the organization are managing their OHS risk.
